# Layerpath for AI agents

This guide is for AI agents using Layerpath. It explains how to connect, check the connection and use Layerpath's tools. The person you're working with can follow the setup instructions at https://www.layerpath.com/mcp.

Layerpath turns real software screens (screenshots, a screen recording or a Loom link) into an interactive tour. A tour has numbered steps, hotspots and callouts that viewers click through. It can be shared by link, embedded, or exported as a video or PDF guide. A tour may also be called a walkthrough or an interactive demo. Each tour is saved as a project in the person's Layerpath workspace.

Layerpath Agent is available through one MCP server:

- Server URL: `https://agent.layerpath.com/mcp` (HTTP)
- Sign-in: OAuth, in the person's browser

## 1. Connect

Follow the instructions for the app you're running in. The person signs in through their browser. Never ask for, print or store a token or password.

- **ChatGPT:** the person opens **Plugins** in the sidebar, searches for Layerpath and selects **Install plugin**, then **Connect** if prompted.
- **Claude (claude.ai and the Claude apps):** the person opens **Customize**, then **Connectors**, selects **Add**, then **Add custom connector**, and enters `Layerpath` as the name and `https://agent.layerpath.com/mcp` as the URL. They then select **Connect**. In a chat, they turn on Layerpath under **+**, then **Connectors**. On Claude Team and Enterprise, an organization Owner must first add it under **Organization settings**, then **Connectors**.
- **Claude Code:** run `claude mcp add --transport http layerpath https://agent.layerpath.com/mcp`. The person then types `/mcp`, chooses layerpath and selects **Authenticate**. If Layerpath is already connected through claude.ai, it appears as **claude.ai Layerpath**. Authenticate that connection instead of adding another.
- **Codex:** run `codex mcp add layerpath --url https://agent.layerpath.com/mcp`. The person signs in through their browser. Start a new session to load the tools.
- **Cursor:** not supported yet because Layerpath doesn't accept Cursor's sign-in. Use one of the supported apps above.

During sign-in, the person chooses which workspace will hold the tours. They must have Owner, Admin or Editor access. Viewers can't create tours.

## 2. Check that it works

The connection is ready when both checks pass:

1. `create_tour` appears in your tool list. If it's missing, the server hasn't been added, the person hasn't signed in, or Layerpath isn't turned on for this chat.
2. `search_tours` with `limit: 1` returns a response without a sign-in error. This is a read-only check.

If either check fails, use the troubleshooting instructions in part 7.

## 3. What you can do from each app

Claude Code and Codex have the same tools as Claude.

| | ChatGPT | Claude | Claude Code and Codex |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshots or a recording | Pass chat attachments in `files`, or have the person add them in the **Create with Agent** box | The person adds files in the **Create with Agent** box. Chat attachments don't reach Layerpath. | Files can't be sent |
| Loom link | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| YouTube link | Yes | No | No |
| Voiceover | `generate_voiceover` | No | No |
| Translate | Yes, in place or as a copy | Yes, except for tours with voiceover | Same as Claude |
| Step tools | `update_steps`, `reorder_steps`, `merge_steps`, `delete_steps`, `edit_intro_outro`, `add_focus`, `set_theme`, `duplicate_tour`, `cleanup_tour` | `update_steps`. Use `edit_tour` for other changes. | Same as Claude |

If no tool supports a requested change, such as adding voiceover from Claude, tell the person they can make it in Layerpath at https://app.layerpath.com.

## 4. Rules

- Use Layerpath's tools to create and edit tours. Don't use browser automation on app.layerpath.com for actions a tool supports. The tools are faster and keep changes editable.
- Use `blur_sensitive` to hide private information. Don't edit the images yourself. Blurs made in Layerpath remain editable. If private information must not reach Layerpath, the person must blur it before uploading the screens.
- New tours are published with a share link when ready. Anyone with the link can open them. Pass `draft: true` to `create_tour` only if the person asks not to publish. `share` publishes an unpublished tour, so confirm with the person before calling it.
- Each call to `create_tour` or `export_video` creates another tour or video. If a call takes longer than expected, check `get_tour_status` or `get_video_status` before trying again.
- Layerpath needs screens from existing software. It can't create tours from screens that haven't been built or from a text-only document.
- Some edits return a plan. Show it to the person, then call `answer_plan` with their response.
- AI-generated content can have errors. Check the tour before reporting that it's ready, and recommend that the person review it before sharing.

## 5. Recipes

**Create a tour from a video.** Call `create_tour` with `link` (a Loom link, or a YouTube link in ChatGPT). Include the person's instructions about audience, focus or tone in `instructions`. Creation usually takes a few minutes. Use `get_tour_status` to check progress.

**Create a tour from screenshots or a recording.**
- ChatGPT: pass the attached files in `files`, in order.
- Claude: call `create_tour` without a link. The **Create with Agent** box opens for the person to add files.
- Claude Code and Codex: files can't be sent. Ask for a Loom link, or ask the person to create the tour at https://app.layerpath.com using Create with Agent. Then find the tour with `search_tours` and edit it here.

**Create a tour from a document or SOP.** Layerpath needs the real software screens. Ask the person for screenshots or a recording of the steps described in the document. Include the document's steps in `instructions`.

**Change the words.** Use `get_tour` to read the steps, write the replacement text, then save it with `update_steps`. In Claude, Claude Code and Codex, changing the words in a step removes its voiceover so the audio doesn't contradict the new text.

**Make other changes.** Call `edit_tour` with the person's request in plain words. For example, move or merge steps, change the intro or outro, apply their Brand memory, or fix a hotspot. In ChatGPT, use a step tool when it supports the change.

**Blur private information.** Call `blur_sensitive`. Use `what` to specify what to blur (the default is emails, names and other private data). Use `steps` to select specific steps.

**Add voiceover (ChatGPT only).** Call `generate_voiceover`. Include `voice`, `language` and `steps` if the person specified them.

**Translate a tour.** Call `translate` with `language`. Add `asCopy: true` to keep the original.

**Share and export.**
- `share` returns a share link or embed link.
- `export_video` creates a video. Use `options` to set quality, captions, music and other options. Check progress with `get_video_status`.
- `export_pdf` creates a PDF guide.

**Find a tour.** `search_tours` searches tour names, starting with the newest. It doesn't search text within steps.

**Undo a change.** `undo_edit` reverses changes made through these tools. It can't reverse changes made directly in Layerpath.

**Check your work.** `get_tour` returns the numbered steps, callouts, descriptions and voiceover scripts. Review them before reporting back.

## 6. Limits

- Screenshots: PNG or JPEG, up to 15 MB each.
- Screen recordings: up to 200 MB and 10 minutes long.
- Loom and YouTube videos: up to 10 minutes long.
- ChatGPT: up to 30 files from the chat at a time.

## 7. If something goes wrong

- **"Your Layerpath session has expired":** reconnect Layerpath. In Claude Code, type `/mcp` and select **Authenticate** again.
- **"You're no longer a member of this Layerpath workspace":** reconnect and choose a workspace the person belongs to.
- **"This tour belongs to another of your Layerpath workspaces":** reconnect and choose the workspace containing the tour.
- **"Only the tour's creator or an Owner or Admin in (workspace) can edit it":** ask the creator or an Owner or Admin to make the change.
- **The person can't choose a workspace during sign-in:** they have Viewer access. An Owner or Admin can change their role to Editor.
- **A share link doesn't open:** the tour may be unpublished. Call `share` to publish it.

For help, the person can email support@layerpath.com. Include the app used, tour name or share link, original request, what happened, and the time with their time zone.
