This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply a mask to elements within Figma. Masking is a powerful feature that allows you to show only certain parts of an image or shape, effectively creating 'windows' through which the background is visible.

1. **Place Elements** – Add the **image or object** you want to mask and the **shape** (rectangle, circle, etc.) you want to use as the mask.
2. **Position Shape** – Place the mask shape **above** the image or object in the layer panel and **align it** to the area you want to reveal.
3. **Select Both** – Hold **Shift** and click both the shape and the image to select them together.
4. **Apply Mask** – Press **Ctrl + Alt + M** (Windows) or **Cmd + Option + M** (Mac) or right-click and choose **“Use as Mask”**.
5. **Group Automatically** – Figma creates a **masked group** with the shape hiding parts of the image outside it.
6. **Edit Mask** – Double-click the mask group to move or resize the image or the mask shape independently.
7. **Unmask if Needed** – Right-click the mask group and choose **“Remove Mask”** to undo.
