How much does Scribe cost?

Scribe prices per seat, where a seat is someone who creates guides. The Pro Team tier is cheaper per seat than Pro Personal but carries a five-seat minimum.

The Basic plan is more limited than a free tier usually looks: it captures web apps only, and it cannot export to PDF, HTML, or Markdown, which is how most teams actually distribute a guide. Desktop capture and export both start at Pro.

Pro Personal scales one seat at a time. Pro Team is cheaper per seat but never bills for fewer than five.

For a team of three, Pro Personal is $105 a month while Pro Team's five-seat floor is $85 — which is why Scribe's own page nudges teams of three or more toward Pro Team. Annual billing lowers every figure by 20%.

1. Export is a paid feature. Basic cannot export to PDF, HTML, or Markdown. If your guides live anywhere other than a Scribe link, you are on Pro at minimum.

2. Desktop capture is a paid feature. Basic captures web apps only. Documenting a desktop or native app starts at Pro.

3. Pro Team's real floor is five seats. The $17 per-seat rate looks like the cheapest option, but you cannot buy fewer than five, so the entry price is $85 a month, not $17.

4. Version history is short on Pro. One week on both Pro tiers; unlimited only on Enterprise. If you need to see what a guide said last month, that is an Enterprise capability.

5. A guide is a snapshot. Scribe captures the screens as they were when you recorded. When the product changes, the screenshots are wrong, and the fix is to recapture the process. Nothing on the pricing page charges for this; the team pays it in redone guides.

Layerpath costs more than Scribe per seat, at every team size. We put that first because it is checkable in one click, and the rest of the page only means something if this part is honest.

The same edge applies as on any Layerpath comparison: Pro caps at three creators, and a fourth moves you to Team at $500 a month, so three creators to four is a jump from $150 to $500. If you are a four-person team, talk to us rather than reaching for a card.

Both tools price a seat. Neither prices the work that seat has to redo when the product changes.

Scribe produces a step-by-step guide: a sequence of screenshots and text, captured as the screens were at that moment. It is fast, and for a written how-to it is very good. But a guide is a snapshot. When the interface moves, the screenshots are out of date, and Scribe's answer is to recapture the process.

Layerpath captures a workflow once and turns it into three things from a single source: an interactive tour a viewer can drive, a step-by-step guide, and a narrated video. When the product changes, you edit the step that changed and republish all three. You are maintaining one source, not recapturing a guide and re-recording a video separately.

So the unit that actually matters is not the seat, it is the guide you have to keep accurate. We will not put a number on the saving, because we do not have one we can source and an invented figure is the first thing a reader could disprove. Run this on your own numbers:

1. How many guides are in your library right now?

2. How many did you recapture in the last six months because the interface changed, not because the steps were wrong?

3. Who did the recapturing, and what else needed them that week?

If the answer to the second question is zero, Scribe is the right and cheaper purchase. If it is a standing item on someone's list, the per-seat price is no longer the number that decides this.

Often. Choose Scribe when the job is a written, step-by-step guide and the process is stable: internal SOPs, onboarding checklists, IT and finance procedures, one-off how-tos for a client. Scribe captures those in seconds and its export and redaction tools are built for exactly that work. For a solo consultant or a small team producing static documentation, it is both faster and cheaper than Layerpath, and it is the better buy.

Layerpath does not try to be a faster guide generator. If a screenshot guide is all you need, Scribe does it well and costs less. And the two are not mutually exclusive: if your need grows from static guides into interactive walkthroughs and video that have to stay current, that is the point where the comparison changes.

Read the shape, not the rows. The tools in the teens capture a process and produce a document. The tools around $50 build something interactive and then maintain it. Decide which job you are buying before you compare the numbers, because $17 against $50 across that line tells you almost nothing on its own.

Prices change, so every figure on this page carries a date. Where a number here disagrees with a vendor's own pricing page, the vendor's page is correct.
